Ray Charles was one of the most important and influential personalities in R&B and soul, having his first hit in 1949 and enjoying chart success through into the 1970s. This was one of his original albums, released in 1959, and comprising swinging big band arrangements of some well-known pop songs, from early classics like Irving Berlin’s “Alexanders Ragtime Band” and other Great American Songbook material – “It Had To Be You”, “When Your Lover Has Gone” and “Come Rain Or Come Shine” – through to Louis Jordan’s jump blues hit “Let The Good Times Roll”. It’s a well-named collection showcasing the unique styling of one of popular music’s most distinctive performers.
