Along with Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet were one of the first “New Romantic” bands to arrive on the scene in the early ’80s as a deliberate stylistic antidote to punk, taking advantage also of the potential of the polyphonic synthesiser to develop a new sound. They racked up a string of hits, over time moving into the pop middle ground to create radio classics like “True” and “Gold”.
