Description

British cellist Jacqueline Du Pre, who was married to renowned pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim, was recognised as one of the finest exponents of that instrument, despite her career being cut short when she was forced to give up playing at the age of 28 by multiple sclerosis. This recording of Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir John Barbirolli is regarded a benchmark performance of the work, which became her signature concert piece. It is coupled here with Dame Janet Baker’s performances of Elgar’s “Sea Pictures”.
